Identify, Correct, Prevent.
The gentle therapeutic technique of microStretching challenges the archaic notion of “no pain, no gain“. To maximize the proper recovery and regeneration of the body, the “greatest gain is made without pain“. According to the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP), pain is:
An unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage, or described in terms of such damage. IASP has stated that it is a subjective learned response as a result of the experience due to injury, with biologists recognizing that those pain stimuli are liable to damage tissue.
Therefore, if one is already experiencing chronic pain, subjecting oneself to more pain is counterproductive! This only further heightens inflammation and the inflammatory response.
Most people experiencing a microStretching treatment reflect on the sensation that changes have occurred in their body without any pain! These changes are expressed as a feeling of blood flowing through their legs and arms, a decrease in muscle tension, feeling light and balanced on their feet, moving freely, and getting better sleep.
Facilitated microStretching is another tool for health-care professionals such as: physiotherapists, athletic therapists, athletic trainers, and other health care professionals. Treatments are centered on reversing any aberrant musculoskeletal patterns in response to injury (i.e compensation shifts), repetitive movements, and imbalances. Treatments are not concerned mainly with the site(s) of injury, but are performed bilaterally, for the other muscles and joints are adjusted to accommodate for the injury, expressed as areas of increased muscle tightness and tension. This systemic and methodical approach is concerned with the origins and insertions of muscles, distal and proximal to the joints. This approach affords the identification and correction of any asymmetry ensuring proper synergy of the various muscle groups relative to the joints. Utilizing this therapeutic modality properly aides in the recovery, regeneration, and pain management of athletes as well as individuals suffering from various musculoskeletal disorders. The series of photos below demonstrate Nikos microStretching the hip flexors and IT band of a professional hockey player. Typical sessions last 40 minutes and are individualized to the needs of the athlete or person.
